Gunite vs. Vinyl Liner vs. Fiberglass Pools: Which Is Best for North Texas?

Once you decide to build a pool, the next big choice is how it is built. The three main construction types are gunite, vinyl liner, and fiberglass. They are not equals: in the Dallas-Fort Worth climate, with its expansive clay soil and intense summer heat, gunite is the far superior method. Here is a straight comparison that shows why, and why gunite is the only method we build with.

Gunite: the custom standard in DFW

Gunite is a mixture of sand, cement, and water sprayed over a steel rebar framework, then troweled and finished on site. Because the shell is formed in place, a gunite pool can be built in literally any shape, depth, or size, which makes it the foundation of true custom design.

Gunite shells are extremely strong and long-lasting, and they support every premium feature homeowners want: tanning ledges, vanishing edges, integrated spas, grottos, and custom water features. This flexibility and durability is why gunite is the method we build with for North Texas backyards.

You may also hear the term shotcrete. Shotcrete and gunite are closely related sprayed-concrete methods; the main difference is when the water is added, whether the concrete is mixed with water before it reaches the nozzle (wet-mix shotcrete) or at the nozzle itself (gunite, a dry-mix process). They are not the same thing, and at Lucent Pools we build exclusively with gunite, not shotcrete.

Vinyl liner: lower upfront cost, ongoing replacement

Vinyl liner pools use a supporting wall frame, typically steel or polymer panels, fitted with a flexible vinyl membrane that holds the water. Their main appeal is a lower upfront price and a smooth surface that feels soft underfoot.

The trade-off is the liner itself. Vinyl liners generally need replacement every seven to ten years, they can be torn or punctured, and design options are more limited than a fully custom gunite shell. In our expansive North Texas clay, the rigid wall panels can also be sensitive to soil movement over time.

Fiberglass: fast but limited

Fiberglass pools arrive as a pre-molded shell that is lowered into the excavated hole. The big advantage is speed, since installation is much quicker than building a shell from scratch, and the smooth surface resists algae.

The trade-offs are real, though. You are limited to the manufacturer's available shapes and sizes, large shells can be difficult to transport and place, and the shell can be affected by ground movement. In our expansive clay soil, that ground movement is a genuine consideration. Fiberglass can be a fine choice for a simple, smaller pool, but it cannot match gunite for custom design.

The bottom line for North Texas homeowners

For North Texas, gunite is in a class of its own. Vinyl liner and fiberglass each have a narrow appeal on upfront price or speed, but neither can match gunite for strength, design freedom, or the ability to stand up to our expansive clay soil and brutal summers. A steel-reinforced gunite shell is engineered in place for your exact yard, holds up for decades, and carries every premium feature you could want, with no liner to replace and no factory mold to limit your design.

That is why Lucent Pools builds with gunite exclusively. We do not build vinyl liner, fiberglass, or shotcrete pools, because we believe a custom gunite pool is the only one worth putting our name on here in the Metroplex. If you want a one-of-a-kind pool built to last, we would love to walk through your project with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a gunite pool the same as a shotcrete pool?

They are closely related but not identical. Both spray concrete over steel rebar, but gunite uses a dry mix that is combined with water at the nozzle, while shotcrete is mixed with water beforehand. Lucent Pools builds with gunite, not shotcrete.

Are fiberglass pools good for North Texas?

Fiberglass installs quickly and resists algae, but it is limited to factory shapes and sizes and can be affected by our expansive clay soil. For custom designs and long-term durability, gunite is the preferred choice.

Which pool type lasts the longest?

A properly engineered gunite shell is exceptionally durable and can last for decades with normal maintenance and periodic resurfacing, typically outlasting vinyl liner pools, whose liners need periodic replacement.
