A pool heater extends your swim season and makes a spa usable year-round, so when it stops working it is frustrating. Heaters are also the most complex piece of pool equipment, with gas, electrical, and water systems all working together. Here are the most common heater problems and how to know when it is time to replace one.
Common heater problems
The most frequent complaints are a heater that won't fire at all, one that fires then shuts off quickly, or one that runs but won't reach the set temperature. Each of these points to a different underlying issue, which is why a proper diagnosis matters.
Causes range from a dirty or clogged burner, a failed ignitor or flame sensor, and a tripped high-limit switch, to insufficient water flow, gas supply problems, or corroded internal components. Error codes on the control panel often help narrow it down.
Why flow and chemistry matter
Heaters need adequate water flow to operate safely, so a heater problem is sometimes really a pump, filter, or valve problem starving the heater of flow. Diagnosing the whole system, not just the heater, is key to a lasting fix.
Water chemistry plays a role too. Unbalanced water, especially low pH, corrodes the heat exchanger from the inside, which is one of the most common causes of premature heater failure. Good maintenance protects the heater you have.
Repair or replace?
Many heater issues are repairable, such as replacing an ignitor, flame sensor, or control board, and restoring proper flow. If the heater is reasonably new and the heat exchanger is sound, repair is usually the right call.
Replacement makes sense when the heat exchanger is corroded through, the heater is old and repairs are stacking up, or efficiency has dropped significantly. A modern, efficient heater can be cheaper to run and more reliable than nursing an old one along.
