Pool heater won't turn on or won't ignite

A gas heater that won't light usually has a failed ignitor or flame sensor, a bad control board, a gas supply problem, or a tripped high-limit or pressure switch. The error code on the control panel often narrows it down, so note it before you call.

First, make sure the pump is running, the heater is on, and it is set above the water temperature. Check that the filter is clean and the valves are open, because most heaters won't fire without enough water flow. Never open the gas valve, burner tray, or any gas part yourself. If you smell gas, shut the heater off and call your gas company.

Pool heater turns on, then shuts off

A heater that lights and then shuts off is often a flow, pressure, or sensor problem. A dirty filter, a full pump basket, a weak pump, or a closed valve can starve the heater of water, and the heater shuts itself off to stay safe. Overheating and a failing pressure switch cause the same symptom.

Heater problems are sometimes pump, filter, or valve problems. We diagnose the whole equipment pad, not only the heater, so the fix lasts.

Pool heater runs but won't heat the water

When the heater runs but the water stays cold, the usual causes are scale or corrosion in the heat exchanger, a bypass valve set wrong, or a heater that is too small for the pool. A heat pump on a cold day can also run without keeping up.

Heat pump repair

Heat pumps run on power, not gas, and pull heat from the air. When one stops heating we check the fan, the compressor, the sensors, and the airflow around the unit. Heat pumps slow down or stop on very cold days, so a slow heat pump in a cold snap is not always broken.

Keep leaves and debris clear of the unit so air can move, and keep the pump running with a clean filter so water flows through it.

Repair or replace your pool heater?

Repair usually makes sense for an ignitor, flame sensor, control board, or flow problem on a heater that is otherwise sound. Replacement makes sense when the heat exchanger has failed or repairs keep stacking up. We'll tell you if a repair is a waste of money.

When a heater needs replacing, we usually recommend Jandy, since new Jandy equipment we install carries a 3-year warranty. The choice is yours. If you'd rather keep your current brand, we'll supply and install that instead.

Why water chemistry matters for heaters

Unbalanced water, especially low pH, corrodes the heat exchanger from the inside. It is one of the most common reasons heaters fail early. Balanced water from regular pool maintenance protects the heater you have.

What heater repair costs

Heaters and heat pumps are priced after diagnosis. The cost depends on the part that failed, whether it is a gas heater or a heat pump, how easy the unit is to reach, and its age. You see the estimate before any work starts.

The service call fee goes toward the labor for your repair. You only pay the service call if you decide not to go ahead with the repair.

Our standard repair rates are on the pool repair page.

Repair workmanship is covered for 90 days. Parts carry their manufacturer's warranty, and new Jandy equipment we install carries a 3-year warranty through our Jandy ProEdge status.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't my pool heater fire or stay on?

Most often it is a failed ignitor or flame sensor, low water flow from a dirty filter or closed valve, a tripped safety switch, or a gas supply problem. The error code on the panel helps narrow it down. Call 817-339-6770 and we'll diagnose the heater and the rest of the pad.

Do you repair heat pumps as well as gas heaters?

Yes. We repair gas pool heaters and electric heat pumps. On a heat pump we check the fan, compressor, sensors, and airflow, plus water flow from the pump and filter. Heat pumps slow down in very cold weather, so we'll tell you whether it is a fault or the weather.

Do you repair Jandy, Raypak, and Rheem heaters?

Yes. We diagnose and repair gas heaters and heat pumps, including common Jandy, Raypak, and Rheem units. We service and repair all pool equipment brands, including Jandy, Pentair, and Hayward. We are an Authorized Jandy ProEdge Warranty Station and can also help with Pentair and Hayward warranty claims.

Can you repair my pool heater instead of replacing it?

Yes. We repair all major brands, including Jandy, Pentair, and Hayward. If a repair will do the job, we fix the equipment you have. When something needs replacing, we usually recommend Jandy. As a Jandy ProEdge builder and dealer and an Authorized Jandy ProEdge Warranty Station, we can give you a 3-year warranty on new Jandy equipment. The choice is always yours, though. If you'd rather stay with your current brand, we'll supply and install that instead.
